Unlocks and supply: W 2.0 replaced annual cliff unlocks with bi-weekly releases; around October 16, 2026, about 50.41 million W (0.5% of total supply, roughly $875,000 to $1.4 million) unlocked for ecosystem and incubation, strategic network participants, core contributors and Guardian nodes. Of the 10 billion maximum supply, about 6.6 billion circulates, while the foundation treasury still follows its original four-year daily schedule.
Progress and value capture: In early September, HYPE went multichain via the Native Token Transfers framework, re-promoted on October 2, and W rose about 30% in a week to around $0.0174. Protocol revenue flows into the Wormhole Reserve with a planned 4% base yield for governance stakers, but the token still has no fee switch or buyback, and trades about 99% below its $1.60 launch price.
On October 2, 2026, Wormhole brought Hyperliquid's HYPE to Solana, Base and Unichain through Native Token Transfers, and days later SHIB went live on Solana via its infrastructure. Combined with the W 2.0 tokenomics and a Ripple RLUSD integration, W rose more than 200% in a month, recovering from an all-time low of $0.0078 on July 31 to around $0.03.
W 2.0 created a Wormhole Reserve, a 4% base yield for governance stakers, and replaced large annual unlocks with biweekly releases; about 50.4 million W, 0.5% of supply, unlocked on October 16. The protocol has enabled over $70 billion in cumulative cross-chain transfers.
Future strategy and roadmap: Rebuild Portal from a cross-chain bridge into a comprehensive DeFi application, and realize ZK light clients for Ethereum, Near and Aptos in the Era4 roadmap to reduce reliance on external verification. Building on the experience of bringing assets like HYPE and SHIB to multiple chains via native token transfer (NTT), keep expanding stablecoin cross-chain through the Ripple RLUSD integration, and use the W 2.0 Wormhole Reserve and governance stakers to provide ongoing incentives for cross-chain messaging and interoperability infrastructure.
