ZEC rallied sharply and hit an all-time high: about $1,699 on September 26, 2026, before pulling back to $1,300-$1,370 in early October, a year-to-date gain of over 700% with market cap back in the top ten. Drivers include Grayscale's Zcash ETF (ZCSH) launching on NYSE Arca on August 25, which drew hundreds of millions of dollars of early inflows, and the SEC closing its investigation of the Zcash Foundation in January without enforcement action.
On the protocol side: the Ironwood (NU6.3) upgrade activated on July 28, fixing the Orchard pool vulnerability disclosed in May and making circulating supply independently auditable (about 85% of funds migrated by end of August). The NU7 vote closed September 14 saw about 2.4 million ZEC (roughly 66% of eligible supply) back shortening block time from 75 to 25 seconds with 99.9% support and keeping the halving schedule with 98.9%; 25-second blocks went live in early October. Shielded transactions rose to roughly 47%-59% of activity.
On May 29, 2026 security researcher Taylor Hornby found a flaw in the Orchard pool's elliptic curve implementation during an audit commissioned by Shielded Labs that could in theory have allowed unlimited counterfeit ZEC; the team soft-forked on June 1 to halt new Orchard operations and executed the NU6.2 hard fork on June 3 to fix it, with no evidence of exploitation.
Ironwood (NU6.3) was unveiled on June 6, creating a new shielded pool with formal verification and external audits while restricting the legacy Orchard pool to spend-only, and it activated on mainnet in late July. Grayscale's spot ZEC ETF (ZCSH) listed on August 25 and passed $500 million by mid-September, with ZEC trading above $1,500 on September 18. NU7 is set for November 5, cutting block times from 75 to 25 seconds, with testnet activation on October 6 and block height confirmation on October 20.
Zcash's decisive variable is jurisdiction rather than technology: EU Regulation 2024/1624 bars regulated platforms from offering anonymity-enhancing assets from July 2027, so European venues and custodians will retrench before the protocol does. Its answer is to make privacy auditable: Ironwood's turnstile lets outsiders verify supply independently, FROST threshold signatures and the Z3 stack target institutional custody, and ZSAs extend shielding to token issuance. Capital channels are now in place through Paradigm's investment, a spot ETF and the Nasdaq-listed CYPH treasury, keeping development funded after the original dev fund wound down, at the cost of tying the asset more tightly to its privacy narrative.
