On unlocks and funding, daily WLD unlocks were cut 43% from 5.1 million to 2.9 million tokens starting July 24; the same day the World Foundation closed a $52.5 million token sale led by Pantera Capital with a 12-month lockup, following a $135 million strategic sale led by a16z in May; and on September 28 World Assets closed $49 million in OTC sales, also locked for one year.
On capital markets, Grayscale filed with the SEC for the first U.S. WLD ETF on July 21, and SwissBorg listed WLD on October 7.
On product and regulation, the World Money app rolled out in more than 150 countries on September 17, and a September 30 partnership with peaq applies World ID to machine identity verification. Regulation is mixed: Kenya lifted its suspension while Spain and Portugal opened reviews.
On June 15, 2026 the project entered the third phase of "the simple plan", shifting growth toward utility and concentrating resources on San Francisco, New York, the UK, Germany, Japan and South Korea; World ID 4.0 introduced a fee mechanism under which credential issuers and protocols can charge relying parties while end users use the protocol free. The next-generation Orb moves to self-service, targeting 95% self-service operation by the end of 2026.
In July the World Foundation sold 217.4 million WLD to Pantera Capital and other institutions at a discount, raising about $52.5 million at roughly $0.24 per token, a 36% discount to market, with a one-year lock-up; proceeds fund World ID for enterprises, consumers and AI agents. Zoom meanwhile launched meeting identity verification that compares Orb iris enrolment, a live selfie and video frames, plus verifiable credentials for AI agents. The network has more than 39 million users, 18 million of whom completed Orb verification.
Future strategy and roadmap: World's monetization rests on a counterintuitive call: the payer for proof of personhood is the enterprise, not the user. World ID 4.0 lets credential issuers and protocols charge relying parties while end users pay nothing; Zoom, Okta and DocuSign provide enterprise entry points, Tinder and Concert Kit supply high-frequency human-verification use cases, and AgentKit turns "a human stands behind this agent" into a sellable credential. Self-serve Orbs and a retreat to San Francisco, New York, the UK, Germany, Japan and Korea are the precondition for lowering acquisition cost per user; success depends on network effects forming in those dense cities first, not on Orb count. Protocol revenue therefore scales with enterprise integrations rather than verification count.
