Mina is a Layer 1 that compresses chain state with recursive zero-knowledge proofs: a full node verifies a single recursive proof of about 22 KB to confirm the entire history instead of replaying every transaction, which lets a light client verify on a phone or in a browser. zkApps are written in o1js, with computation off-chain and proofs submitted on-chain, so only state and verification logic live on the chain, suiting privacy, verifiable computation and lightweight access.
The ecosystem centres on identity, voting, bridges and light clients, and developers embed proof generation into existing applications through the SDK. The Mesa hard fork activated on 3 September, cutting block time from 180 to 90 seconds and raising limits on zkApp state, events and account updates. The token has no maximum supply, inflation runs near 7% a year, and about 3.625 million tokens unlock at each month end.

Mainnet upgrade: The Mesa hard fork (MIPs 6-9) activated on September 3, halving block time from 180 to 90 seconds, raising zkApp on-chain state, event and account-update limits and enabling automated hard forks; on August 18 a Blockworks transparency filing put MINA data on more than 350,000 Bloomberg terminals.
Supply and unlocks: There is no supply cap and long-run inflation is 7%; about 3.625 million MINA unlocks at each month end, 0.4% of supply and 0.5% of market cap, with 35 events and 126.88 million tokens remaining through May 2029. There is no buyback or burn.
On 3 September 2026 Mina activated its Mesa hard fork after roughly eight hours of network downtime. The upgrade halved slot time from 180 to 90 seconds, expanded onchain state from 8 to 32 fields, raised the number of account updates and events allowed per transaction, and introduced automated hard forks so nodes can prepare and restart without manual coordination.
The cost was a compatibility break: deployed zkApps need new verification keys compiled with o1js 3.0, and proof-authorised activity stayed paused until developers migrated. MINA traded near 0.083 dollars around 9 September, up 2.1 percent in a day, a muted reaction suggesting the upgrade was already priced in, and it drifted lower with the wider market in early October.
Future strategy and roadmap: Mina has begun scoping its next upgrade, with early priorities around security hardening, memory improvements and fill-rate gains. The team is also pushing migration tooling and documentation so the combination of a 22KB chain and programmable cryptography reaches more applications that need privacy-preserving verification.
