In 2026 DIMO rewrote its story from 'a data network for connected cars' to 'infrastructure for the session-based economy'. The shift is not cosmetic: vehicle access, identity and owner consent are packaged into a single permissioned API spanning more than 50 brands including Tesla, Ford, BMW, Toyota and Hyundai, and developers can open a free account, generate keys and query location, charge and fuel level, odometer, tire pressure and diagnostic codes over GraphQL and REST with official TypeScript, Python and C# SDKs.
The product changes are concrete. The DIMO LTE R1 hardware brought almost any car online in minutes with high-frequency data streaming to the network; the platform core is open source and supports bring-your-own-device telematics; a free Hobbyist tier gets a developer to a first call in minutes. On the data path it uses Helium IoT on Solana, began on Polygon PoS and has been moving toward Base while broadening token availability. The protocol handles identity, permissions, settlement and coordination while telemetry stays offchain, a split designed both for privacy and to satisfy GDPR and the EU Data Act's requirement that consent activate and expire per session. The network reports more than 100,000 connected vehicles, and developers buy access in DIMO Credits at 1,250 DCX, about $1.25, per vehicle per month, with credits burned on use. The metric that matters here is paid developer usage rather than vehicle count, and on public data token incentives still outweigh protocol revenue.
DIMO will productise the per-session model for rentals, fleet turnover, usage-based insurance and subscription vehicles, widen what AI agents can do with vehicle data, and finish the Base migration. The thesis to prove is that fragmented automaker APIs justify an independent paid middleware layer.
