BitTorrent is the on-chain infrastructure behind the long-running P2P file distribution protocol, with BitTorrent Chain (BTTC) handling cross-chain settlement and BTT used for gas and staking. The network runs PoS consensus, with a set of validators producing blocks and signing cross-chain messages, and it maps assets across TRON, Ethereum and BNB Chain. BTFS handles content addressing through storage contracts and node collateral, with BTT paying for storage, giving a three-layer structure of bandwidth, storage and settlement.
It channels BitTorrent's distributed-transfer user base on-chain: BTTC moves assets across chains, BTFS addresses content, and together with the mainnet they support decentralised distribution; compared with IPFS plus Filecoin it relies more on its own validator set than on an independent storage market. A revised whitepaper published in October 2026 split the network into a mainnet, a decentralised GPU compute layer and a cross-chain settlement layer, linked by cross-chain messages and asset mapping.

On July 6, 2026, BitTorrent unveiled a mainnet and tokenomics redesign; on October 16 it completed its first BTT buyback-and-burn, destroying about 21.62 trillion BTT (worth roughly $7.6 million); on October 17 it published a new whitepaper proposing modules including Mainnet, BTTInferGrid and BTTC to strengthen storage and AI inference.
Future strategy and roadmap: BitTorrent will advance the mainnet upgrade and BTT deflation mechanism, enter AI inference via BTTInferGrid, and continue buyback-and-burn to improve token value capture.
