Ambient is a Layer 1 built around verifiable AI inference, forked from Solana and switched to proof-of-work. Its core is Proof of Logits: miners run open models and submit inference results, and the network checks the logits to confirm the model actually executed, so a third party calling an AI does not have to trust the provider. It targets closed APIs whose outputs cannot be verified and whose model versions cannot be proven.
Token distribution runs through onchain auctions, tying compute supply to inference demand. By June its API had processed over 134 billion tokens with more than 126,000 registered developers. The current build runs on testnet with a narrow model list and verification scope; whether verifiable inference can cost less than centralized inference decides the approach. Verification cost rises with model size, the main constraint on commercialization.
